Product Description Pop-Ups

Product Description Pop-Ups puts an Open in Pop-Up Window choice back in your editor’s link dialog. Mark a link while you’re writing a description, and that one link opens in a small window instead of taking the shopper off the page. It’s a per-link choice, not a pop-up on every product: nothing opens in a window unless you asked it to.

CKEditor 4 offered this on its Target tab, and the editors that replaced it dropped it. This plugin adds it back where each release needs it: a switch in the link box in CKEditor 5 (Zen Cart 2.1 and later) and a Class list entry in TinyMCE (2.2 and later). On 1.5.8 and 2.0, CKEditor 4 keeps its own Target tab. The choice appears on the product, category, define page, EZ-Page and banner editors and nowhere else — not on mail or newsletters. No core or template file is changed.

On the storefront, an image opens in a window sized to it, and Escape closes it; a PDF or a page opens at its own address, where version 1 showed a broken image for both. Links that appear after the page loads — tabs, quick views — work too. If the browser blocks the pop-up the link simply opens the normal way instead of raising an alert, and Ctrl, Cmd, Shift, Alt and middle clicks are left to the browser. The window is built with DOM calls and no inline script, so a Content-Security-Policy doesn’t block it.

Upgrading from version 1: delete includes/templates/YOUR_TEMPLATE/jscript/jscript_popup.js from every template you copied it into. Links you already marked with class="image-popup" keep working.

Zen Cart 1.5.8 through 3.0.0, PHP 7.4 through 8.5, one codebase, verified on each release branch. GPL-2.0.

See it working. This plugin is installed in our live demo store, where you can try it in a real storefront and admin before you download it. Open the live demo or read about the demo.
Need it tailored to your store? We customize our own plugins, and other developers' plugins and mods too, wherever their license allows it (most Zen Cart plugins are GPL, which does). An extra option, a different placement, a hook into something else you run, an update for a newer Zen Cart or PHP, or a version for your template. Tell us what you have in mind through Contact Us, choosing Customization, and we'll check the license and quote it. More about Plugin Modifications.
